My students need 4 laptops to be able to become hopeful learners and complete developmental lessons on the individualized iReady computer reading program.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I passed the lesson. I did it!" are words you can sometimes hear as my 2nd grade students complete lessons on their iReady reading computer program. I wish I could say I hear these words more "often" but I do not. In a technology driven curriculum my 12 English Language Learners, 10 Special Education students, and 6 retention students are asked to thrive with a lack of technological resources which do not allow them to flourish. My class only has 4 computers available for usage and we do not have enough funds to purchase anymore. In order to help them flourish in reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary more time on the computer program needs to be applied at school for them. At home, due to their low socioeconomic status, where 94% of my students receive free or reduced lunch most of them do not have computers or internet usage available to them.
A desire to flourish and say "I did it!" is what my students look forward to every day.
Yet, they need to take turns to use the 4 computers and sometimes their turn doesn't arrive leaving them feeling hopeless.
My Project
Imagine walking into a classroom filled with 2nd graders who are learning while on their laptops in a technologically driven environment. Can you see them motivated, eager, and hopeful? I can envision this in my classroom as the 4 laptops will add a wealth of opportunity for my students to utilize the iReady computer reading program to improve their phonics, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills.
These 4 laptops will build an atmosphere of hope in knowing they have the appropriate materials in school to be able to learn at their individual pace according to their distinct levels based on their needs.
They will be hopeful as they won't have to wonder if they will be able to use the computers on that given day; the class will have enough technology available for them to rotate through the computer station. "I passed the lesson. I did it!" are the sounds of hope you will hear in the class.
