My Students

Our kindergarten students are the youngest on our campus in central Florida. They love learning. Most come from homes with single parents, a grandparent, or other family members are raising them. The saddest situations are where the students are in a homeless situation.

We are a Title I school.

We have about 89 percent of our students that receive free or reduced rate lunch. When kindergarten teachers make the supply list for the year, one if the items needed is a change of clothes. This even includes socks and underwear! Some of our children do not have a change of clothes in their classroom. Accidents do happen. Our young ones are embarrassed when they have a wetting accident. They often get teased. If there are no clothes to be changed into, the child misses classroom time waiting for someone to find clothes on campus or contact a parent to bring in clothes. Children have had to sit in messy accidents for hours waiting on a parent. This is not healthy nor is it good for the child's self esteem.

My Project

Our small children need a change of clothing when they have had an accident. Children are often too busy playing to realize they need to go to the bathroom and wait until the last moment to go. This is when most of the accidents happen in a kindergarten classroom. With one bathroom for eighteen children, there can be real problems when there is an urgency to go!

Our school nurse goes above and beyond to seek clothing items for the children that have an accident and need clothing.

In the past couple years, we have had difficulty getting donations for undergarments in small sizes. There is policy in place to request the clothing be laundered and returned to the nurses office. A phone call is made to the parent alerting them to the situation and the need for a change of clothing. A note is sent home in the child's agenda asking to follow through with supplying clothes and sending the laundered, borrowed items back to school.
