This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Technology is our future, but where I am teaching, technology is hard to come by. I brought in my personal iPad for my students to use, and their reactions were priceless. I instantly became the coolest teacher, and they had a new grasp on learning without knowing it.
I teach at a beautiful Title I magnet school in the urban area of Houston.
Our school promotes student growth in a safe and encouraging environment. I am a first time third grade teacher teaching a group of students in which half are in an English language classroom for the first time. They are lively and brilliant individuals, but the language barrier is evident. Every day I watch these children work to improve their English just to function in my classroom. The are also preparing for the STAAR test.
Being an English Language Learner is a difficult thing. These are students who are working twice as hard as regular students because they have to take in what is said to them, comprehend enough to translate it in their brain, and then formulate the answer in English. They need visuals for everything to help them make connections to their native language.
My Project
With all the creative apps that are recommended by our district's curriculum, it is a shame that each student doesn't have an iPad on every campus. My students need two iPads for the listening station in our classroom. My students will use the iPads in our classroom in the listening to reading station as well as for social studies. They will use a variety of engaging applications. Each of these showcase how curriculum can be taken to the next level through technology. Students will be able to use the iPads to read leveled readers, listen to leveled readers, analyze photos using research tools and create with their own green screen to present information.
On top of those applications for all students in my classroom, I have one student in particular that will use one of the iPads consistently throughout the day. He is a special case. This student is in a mainstream classroom for the first time and operates and learns best through technology. I can use the iPad to generate a video/audio slide show to read stories to him or practice sight words.
Having the iPads in the classroom will give my students the opportunity to manipulate and experience technology that they may not get in their lives otherwise.
Technology has become so prominent in today's world that exposing them and teaching them the ways to use the Internet is extremely important.
