My Project
PBIS is an evidence based framework designed to improve student behavior, increase academic performance, and create a positive learning environment. Our school's expectations are: Belonging, Responsibility, Excellence, Aloha, Total-Well Being, and Hawaii. In my classroom, there are specific ways students can exhibit these expectations, and I reward them with good behavior points aligned to these values. Students then can use these points to purchase items.
The goal of this project is to acquire classroom incentives for students to earn For example, as a student, I know that if I turn in my work on time consistently, I will be rewarded with responsibility points.
I can then save up the points to purchase a classroom snack, squishmallow, jibbit, etc. Having class incentives not only encourages a positive culture of meeting class expectations, but it also builds relationships with my students because they notice that I appreciate and value their commitment to meeting expectations. In the end, by having better relationships and a positive learning environment, overall academic performance increases. Overtime, it allows me to increase academic rigor.
Being a charter school, we are underfunded and we serve students that are socioeconomically disadvantaged. These students deserve to be recognized for their hard work, and academic and behavior achievements. They are motivated to do well with incentives that go beyond earning just good grades. You are helping me foster relationships so I can push my students to achieve more and more in a positive way.
