My Students

Do you remember the 1st time you read a book that was so enthralling that you couldn't put it down? Although some of my students like to read, for many, reading is a chore. I want them to experience the joy of reading a book that is SO good that you just can't stop reading!

Our school is in a poor neighborhood.

Many of my students have parents who did not complete high school or even middle school. Our students face many challenges, including gangs, violence and poverty. I am amazed by my students' perseverance and resilience. I want to prepare them for college and see them be successful. Unfortunately, many of my students are reading far below grade level. That is why I am requesting books for my classroom.

My Project

I am requesting high interest books of varying topics for my classroom. The types of items I am requesting are books about boxing, tattoos, street art and rap music, as well as popular titles such as Twilight and the Harry Potter series. For some students, the cause of not reading is as simple as not having access to a book, and not knowing how to find a book in a library. I hope that if I can get my students hooked on just 1 book, that will be enough motivation to look for another, or to step into a library or bookstore. I want to show my students that reading doesn't have to be boring, as so many kids think it is. There are books on every topic imaginable, and reading can open the doors to a world that is otherwise inaccessible. If I can inspire a love of reading in just one student, I would be happy. Good readers are good writers, and these skills are SO important in today's world. Practice makes perfect and the only way to become a better reader is to read!

My classroom library is composed of old, worn books that seem rather unappealing to my students. I am hoping that an infusion of high interest books will inspire my students to continue reading, to enjoy it and maybe even grow to love it. In turn, I hope that their reading skills will improve so as to make them more successful in today's competitive job market.
