This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." — Frederick Douglass Second graders are on their way to being avid readers but fluency is what they need to succeed. I want my students to be fluent readers at the end of the year. Being a fluent reader will lead them to better comprehension!

My students are curious, energetic and noisy.

They are second graders who are learning so much as each day goes by. We live in a tough Chicago neighborhood where many students don't get to go to the library regularly because their parents work long hours and the library is closed by the time they get home.

My Project

The headphones that we desperately need will help us to listen to stories on iPads that the school owns. We are lucky enough to be able to access good reading material through Reading A to Z. If we had headphones for at least 6 readers we would be able to set up a daily listening and reading center where students can listen to books in either English or Spanish.

This project will help my readers listen to stories and become better readers.

They need good listening skills, fluency skills and this will lead to better comprehension. Sometimes the only way you can understand a story is just by listening to someone else read it to you. The headphones will assist my students by helping them focus on short stories and being able to listen and drown out the other classroom noises.
