This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title I low income school which integrates students on the Autism Spectrum with their able bodied peers. Half of our school children have special needs and more than 90% get free lunch. My kindergarten students are low functioning with Autism which makes focusing on schoolwork hard. My students have a lot of energy and want to change activities after a few moments. I would like an I-pad so my students can access their lessons in full color and animation which they love.

I want to help my students with Autism be successful in life by helping them become more verbal through a special augmentative communication app available in the Apple App Store.

It allows my students to form say complete sentences by choosing a sequence of engaging pictures. The system helps them to talk if they are nonverbal or supports their communication if they are struggling speakers.

My Project

An iPad loaded with an app that supplies students with words+pictures+speech will allow them to make sentences which reveal their minds. As teacher, I will be able to help them overcome their lack of speech and begin to express themselves in meaningful ways. An iPad is very high tech and allows me to lock the screen on the work at hand which prevents the student from wandering to other websites. It allows for increased focus on learning the tasks presented.

I am requesting an iPad and a special communication app which gives my students picture choices paired with words and allows them ability to speak.

When a child touches the picture, it speaks for him/her. It can be customized to speak the words in a child's voice so it is more like him/her. The student can string words together to give answers, ask questions, and express his wants and needs. Giving a child the ability to communicate opens up his/her world and lowers his/her frustration so he/she is able to learn more easily.
