Help me give my students books with characters who look and sound like them. The kids provide feedback and tell me what kind of books keep them coming back for more. These will appeal to many students.
My kids are honest and open about the things they love and care about. They take the content and apply it to real life. I try to choose texts that my students will find engaging and relatable as African-Americans.
Students choose books they feel connected to and care about.
They reflect on their reading using content specific language and analysis. This becomes such a common part of their practice that they do it without thinking and it is part of casual conversation. Just the other day, a student was discussing a television show he enjoyed and added that he hadn't expected to enjoy the female protagonist so much. I love it when they apply the skills without even realizing it!
