This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you could not put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not had much experience reading books.
My transitional kindergarten students live in an economically depressed area which qualifies our school for Title 1 funds and services.
100% of our students receive free lunch. The population of the school is close to 90% Hispanic and my class in particular is 100% Hispanic. All of my students come from hard working families who work long hours to be able to provide for their children. Our school is close to the Los Angelos port. This brings a lot of health concerns brought on by the environment.
My Project
We are a school of hard workers! We were able to bump our API by more than 30 points to 805. We are extremely proud of this and although my transitional kinder students are not yet a part of that (only grades 2-5 are tested) I want to help give them a firm foundation to prepare them for the testing that calculates this score. It's so important for me to help my students develop a love of learning and reading. I have seen the impact that leveled readers has and want to be able to bring this to my class and help them have early success with reading.
This project is important because these kids need to experience success early on.
There are not many opportunities for them to have such positive learning experiences and I really believe this is a perfect way for them to achieve a love of learning!
