This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Were you the child who loved to read or hated to read?
First of all, my students are amazing!
They are eager and excited to come to school every day and learn. Although they are eager learners, they have many challenges in their lives. They live in a community in South Central Los Angeles where gangs, violence, drugs, alcohol abuse, and hunger threaten their childhood. Their lives outside of school are often unstable and the time they are at school is the most stable and routine part of their day.
My Project
The only chance for many of my students to read is at school. In addition to dedicated reading time, my students read at any free moment we have. They need books at their level to make this reading meaningful and beneficial. Leveled books help students become better readers because they are at a student's exact independent reading level. Leveled books allow a student to focus on comprehension, because they do not need to struggle with decoding word after word. Books at students' instructional level are challenging enough so that they improve their reading skills, but not too difficult, so that they will not become frustrated.
Leveled books in our classroom library will help my students in many ways.
No more frustration. No more wanting to throw a book down. No more "I don't want to read." When students have the "just right" book, the world of reading opens up before them.
