Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine walking into a classroom and all the students are reading and understanding what they are reading.

I have a high ESL population in my classroom and the students are at all different reading levels.

All of the students love to read, but most are still struggling with reading comprehension and fluency. Every morning we start with a reading activity; whole group, partner or independent reading. My students want to read, they want to learn to read, and I am determined to do everything I can to help them. Our school is located in a high poverty area where at times there is not enough money to buy clothes for students, let alone books to read. Parents are constantly working and do not have time to take their kids to the library to borrow books or sit down and read with them.

My Project

With iPads in the classroom students will be able to read stories at their level by using a program called Raz-Kids. Students will not only get to read along with stories, but after every story there will be a short quiz for them to complete to assess their comprehension. They will learn to read fluently along with stories and to pay attention while they are reading so that they can understand what is happening in the story. When they are finished reading the story they can choose to read another story or play a phonics game that will be installed on the iPad. Furthermore, students will not only be using the iPads for reading, they will also use them for math learning games and as incentives for good behavior as well.

Your donations will help these students gain confidence in their reading and advance their reading skills by reading along with stories.

They will also be able to play learning games to help advance their reading skills. This will lead to students that have a love of reading and the confidence they need to continue reading throughout their school years and beyond.
