I Can Read This Book! Comics 4 Students w/ Disabilities
My students need more high-interest books that are appropriate for their reading level and age. We have many visual learners in the room. These comics will help develop their reading skills in a fun way.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a 3rd grade special education teacher in an Integrated Co-teaching classroom at a Title I school in NYC. Our class has a broad spectrum of students with various abilities -- from kids who a reading a grade or two ago level to children who are still struggling with sight words and letter sounds.
While my students with learning disabilities may struggle to read, their persistence and motivation is inspiring.
Each day they practice their sight words and sounds. Each day they read aloud to me and their peers to practice their reading skills.
Unfortunately, our school has not provided us with many books at their level. High interest books for students at any level in my classroom are very few. I try my best to print books I think the students will like from the internet. But these often leave them wanting, as the pictures are black and white.
We need more high-interest books that will captivate the interests of young readers in my classroom and make them feel successful.
My Project
Many of my students are strong visual learners or have low reading stamina and need texts to be broken up into small chunks. Many of them have become disheartened with reading because of the difficultly they have had in the past. I struggle to consistently find materials that will keep them interested in reading. Recently, I started buying some comics and my students LOVED them! They flew off the shelves.
The comic books I am requesting for this project will help motivate my students to practice their reading skills.
The TOONs books in my project are designed specifically with this purpose in mind. Their visual structure supports children in understanding that the books are read from left to write and top to bottoms. Speech bubbles facilitate a child's understanding of written dialogue as a transcription of spoken language. Not to mention, the stories are developed with a young audience in mind so they are age appropriate and highly engaging.
Donate to my project and help support reading skills for students with learning challenges and visual learners in my 3rd grade classroom!
