Hi! I teach 2nd grade inclusion at a small public school. I have 26 fabulous students in my class who are eager to learn! Half of my students are identified as English Language Learners, most of whom speak Spanish at home and several have learning disabilities.
As you can imagine, trying to learn both the English language and academic content is a difficult task for 2nd graders! Most of my students are able to communicate socially in English, but struggle when it comes to reading. Struggling to read in English also means that these students struggle to write, read problems presented in math and read science and social studies content. Reading in English is key to their academic success!
However, one very crucial strategy to improve their reading in English is to build upon their current reading abilities in Spanish! The reading skills they have in Spanish will transfer over to English.
In order for my students to become stronger readers of the English language, we need a classroom library that supports their Spanish reading abilities. I am also asking for several sets of high-interest, easy to read books in English so that they are also able to practice their English reading skills. I have a few bilingual books in our classroom library and the students are always eager to read these! My students also have the opportunity to check out a book from our classroom library every single day and they love taking these books home to share with siblings and family.
Your generous donation to our classroom will provide books that support and encourage my students to read in Spanish, while building critical literacy skills so that they can also read in English! You will not only be providing books for my students, but books they can share with their families as they become proficient readers of the English language.
Thank you so much for your support of education and for taking the time to read my proposal! I appreciate it.
