I Can Have Confidence In My Mathematical Thinking!

Teacher Professional Development: I need to attend Greg Tang's math workshop to improve and help my students with understanding difficult concepts and to have new strategies to use. <profdevpilot>

My Students

Greg Tang states, "IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT TEACHING MATH SKILLS ... IT'S ABOUT INSPIRING KIDS TO LEARN AND TO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THEIR OWN THINKING." Each day my students become more and more confident in their thinking.

This is my 16th year of teaching in the public school system.

I began my career at a Title I school with more than 50% of students on free and reduced price lunch. These students were also at a higher risk of falling through the cracks. Although they were smart enough to pass tests, they just weren't getting and retaining the math. Early on in my teaching career I taught math in the traditional way just as I was taught. As a student, I personally struggled with math and had hated doing math. I lacked the number sense I needed to be successful. Teaching students that it is OK to think outside the box and for them to make math connections is a passion for me. Just importantly is teaching parents and guardians how to better understand the reasoning around teaching students to THINK! Many adults lack these critical mathematical skills, just like I did. There is more to math than your standard algorithm. Numbers and mathematical thinking should be FUN for kids! No more "I hate math!"

My Project

Greg Tang brings math to life! I would like to attend his 3-day conference in Kansas City over summer break. I've already had the privilege of attending a two-day conference with Greg! His insight into mathematics and creative approach to teaching research based strategies is motivating for myself and my students. Best of all everything he presents is classroom tested! Immediately after returning from his conference, I began implementing his methods for answering word problems. No matter the grade level that you teach, Greg has something to offer. This is professional development at its finest. Greg Tang's methods are easy to teach and understand. I've been amazed at how my students have grasped the Common Core standards of learning. Each student comes to my classroom with their own idea of "math." They hate it, love it, or just don't get it. By utilizing Greg's approach they have ALL grown to love it! I can't WAIT to get started!

Each year educators face budget cuts.

Our district is no different than others. This professional development will help my students develop mathematical habits of mind and allow them to realize math is fun and is easy. My students will also build numerical, spatial, and logical mathematical reasoning into their day-to-day thinking. These strategies will also enable them to make math, make sense into adulthood and beyond!
