My Students

My students are part of District 75 in NYC, ranging in ages pre-K through age 21, with moderate to severe cognitive, physical, and social disabilities with diagnoses including autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and multiple disabilities. All of my students love engaging in conversations, vocational site tasks, and participating in group activities with staff and peers. Many of my students use alternative augmentative communication devices (AAC devices) where they use picture symbols, sign language, or typing and communication devices to navigate their world and interact with others.

We are working toward having all students be as independent as possible with activities of daily living (i.e.

getting dressed, taking a shower) and benefit greatly from visual supports such as visual schedules, sequences, and reminders in order to stay organized and be independent in everyday life tasks that we often take for granted. All of my students are incredibly special because of their love and appreciation for learning, and I am proud to be a part of their journey!

My Project

All of my students are hands-on, visual learners who benefit from tactile learning that stimulate multiple senses. All materials chosen will support students by continuing to allow them the privilege of engaging with materials hands-on while still maintaining safety and cleanliness.

The sneeze guard barriers will ensure that students are isolated from any harmful particles, while still engaging normally with both their peers and myself as their speech therapist.

The use of a laminator will also aid in keeping materials reusable, easy to clean, and engaging for all students. All of my students benefit from having visuals in front of them to support them in following directions, staying motivated, and comprehending information they are hearing during discussion.
