I aspire to inspire my third-grade students. I’m trying to weave more art, mindfulness, and poetry into my Social Emotional Learning Block. I want my students to learn that art and words can be used as a form of mindfulness or a technique for expressing their emotions. I’ll use the books My Thoughts are Clouds: Poems for Mindfulness, What the Road Said by Cleo, and Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day: 366 Elevating Utterances to Stretch Your Cranium and Tickle Your Humerus as mentor texts to launch this activity. I plan to use the blank hardcover books to house my students’ poetry and artwork. The watercolors, brushes, and paper will be used to experiment and play with color and design to create unique masterpieces for the books. The Sharpies, colored pencils, and ink pads will allow for alternate mediums to experiment with. The colored notebooks will be a place for students to jot their feelings, journal, write their favorite words, and include what they’re grateful for. The sound healing instrument will be used to signal moments of calmness within our classroom community. In addition, I have a calming corner in my classroom. I will place the Theraputty and the deck of mindfulness cards there. Both can be used independently or with a partner. In addition, my students enjoy STEM activities. I’d like to add more options during our Soft Starts in the morning or during indoor recess times. The Snap Circuits and E-Blox Sound Machine and Radio set will be instant hits as they challenge my students to problem solve. As a teacher, I must continue to think about and teach 21st century skills (collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking), and I believe SEL is the foundation for this work. The items I selected will allow me to do just that.
