Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently have a group of 20 fabulous Second Graders in a dual Language classroom. They live in a low income, high poverty stricken inner city community in northern New Jersey. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom due to their socioeconomic status and their varying linguistic abilities. Despite this, they all come to school everyday ready, willing and excited to learn! They tackle challenges and strive to do their best. They are resilient, respectful, and hardworking students.
My Project
Multiplying is a skill that is necessary. I am beginning to teach this concept to my second graders as part of the Common Core curriculum math standards. I want to be able to make this challenging concept one that the students will be eager to learn by having various ways to reinforce multiplications skills while playing a game.
Students love to play games, and why not make learning multiplications facts fun.
The multiplication machine will allow students to self correct immediately with a push of a multiplication fact. They can challenge each other to see who can get the most correct facts. Students can also use the hands-on multiplication and division kit to create multiplication problems and visually see if their responses are correct. The Tower of Math games develops skills in operations & algebraic thinking, number & operations in base 10, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These games can be used as a center during center time to reinforce math skills. The Multiplication Bingo game can be a great way to incorporate learning, reinforcement of math skills and fun into one. Having these games will transform math time and centers as students interact with each other and reinforce multiplication and other math skills.
Hands-on games are a great way to learn, practice and reinforce multiplication skills.
