My Students
The students at my school generally come from low economic backgrounds. Most students crave that extra support from other adults around the school. Also, these students need some extra guidance academically, behaviorally, and/or socially.
As a special education teacher, I have the opportunity to work with students in a smaller group setting to give my students that extra support they need academically, behaviorally, and/or socially.
I am in a fortunate situation to be able to meet each of my student's individual needs. I am also fortunate to be able to help each of my students to experience that feeling of accomplishment that every child wants to achieve.
My Project
Research shows that mindfulness education, lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body, can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students' ability to stay engaged, helping students stay on track academically and avoid behavioral problems. Working with emotional disability students, they often find themselves living in their amygdala (quickly signals a threat or stress in the environment), and are not able to think with their prefrontal cortex (helps people set and achieve goals).
Mindfulness will help students manage their stress more effectively and work through it more quickly.
My students have completed 10-minutes of daily meditation in the past, but this year we are expanding our mindfulness work and my students will have a whole mindfulness class where they can focus on these techniques to calm their mind and body, relieve stress, and help them think more with their prefrontal cortex and less with their amygdala.
Students will need a yoga mat for their mindfulness practices. Students will also use loop bands as part of their mindfulness exercises. Lastly, students will use their yoga mat in their reading class as part of their independent reading time for more flexible seating options.
