This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a School Counselor at an elementary school serving students from kindergarten through fifth. We have a diverse group of students who come from various backgrounds and cultures. It ceases to amaze me how resilient these students are. Despite their home life and the struggles that they encounter, they attend school with enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
Our students reside in a very low economic region of the Bronx.
Many of them come from families who rely on public assistance for income or are homeless. My students can barely purchase hygiene products to meet their basic needs. Last school year, I did a Personal Hygiene presentation for the fifth-grade students. At the end of the presentation, I gave the students a bag of products for them to take home, which I purchased on my own. Seeing how pleased they were to received these items was heartwarming.
My Project
Hygiene is an essential part of maintaining good health and self-care. Students will learn about the changes our bodies go through as we get older. Knowing that they have access to these products will help build confidence within themselves.
We are in the nation’s poorest district;
Most of our families can not afford to purchase the products needed to ensure their child/children are appropriately groomed. Our students deserve to have products that they can use to help them with personal care.
Hopefully, by having deodorant, Purex wipes, always pads, toothbrushes, and toothpaste our students will be motivated to keep up good hygiene practices.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
