My Students

Our students enjoy learning about geography and history through the eyes of someone close to their own age. Malala's story, strength and struggles will appeal to their sense of fairness and open their eyes to the struggles and hardships many people face in different parts of the world.

Our school is an in urban community and serves a population that is diverse economically and racially.

We have some students with a lot, many with very little, and a lot in between. Slightly more than half of our student body is eligible for free or reduced price school lunches. The school has been open since 1958 and is an important part of the community. We have embraced the IB curriculum and inquiry based learning. Our students are typical 12 and 13 year-olds; active, curious and entertaining. Many are just beginning to see beyond the world we live in and growing to understand the different cultures and lifestyles that exist around the world.

My Project

These books will be kept in the classroom and we will read a chapter or two together every class period. Other activities, such as mapping, discussions and free writing will be tied into the book. By using this book students will begin to understand the aftermath of post-colonial conflict in many parts of the world, and how the struggle for power and control has many ancillary victims---many of them innocent children who simple want to live their lives. While this can a should give our students an appreciation for the freedoms they have, it also will awaken them to some of the injustice and difficult living conditions throughout the world. These books will belong to the classroom and will be used each year.

I Am Malala is a life-changing book.

Many students have no idea what living in an area of civil war or other conflict is like, and this book will help to arouse curiosity, build background knowledge, and develop empathy. In addition, learning through reading will build literacy skills.
