My Students

This year my class is comprised of students who are attending school for the first time due to the pandemic. However, they are caring, inquisitive, and eager to learn. They have great expectations for kindergarten. As we embark on this journey learning about their identity is very important. I want to breathe new life into my classroom library which hasn't been updated since the pandemic. I would like to include sets of books that focus on all-inclusiveness, celebrate and promote diversity, and support students to develop positive attitudes towards different racial, ethnic, and cultural groups.

DREM is a small urban public school with approximately 250 students.

Our school is a high needs school and is classified as Title I. Nearly 100 percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our students are filled with school pride.

Students will read books that raise critical consciousness as it relates to issues of inequity in everyday life.

My Project

This collection of books will be used to enlighten students in our classroom. They will complete various activities as they learn and share about their identity and what makes them, "UNIQUE !"

Students will ponder the thought-provoking question, "Who Are You?" They will tell name stories, complete "All About Me" surveys with their families, create identity map(s) and digital stories.

Additionally, the books will be used to promote critical thinking and expose the students to rich literature and powerful stories. These engaging activities will increase their self-confidence and build their self-esteem. Knowing about themselves and the culture of others teaches them to respect others despite their differences, thereby better preparing them to live harmoniously in our global society.

The books will be used as a primary source for our Computer Science lessons, as we learn about identity and diversity. The plugged and unplugged activities will ensure that students will be able to synthesize what they have learned about themselves. They will tell name stories, create digital stories, use Flipgrid to record their stories (using the books as a guide), make self-portraits, code their name, and design story quilts about their families.
