My Project
My students come from difficult backgrounds, ones I can't even imagine. We are a Title I school with 100% free/reduced price lunch. My students face challenges every day that I could never dream of. What I love about my students, though, is that no matter what hardship they have faced in life they refuse to let people put them in a box. They are bright young men and young women. They push themselves to do better. They are fighters. They crave education. They want to learn. They want to be better than what society tells them they are.
Many of our students, for whatever reason, don't have access to some of the most basic, necessary items.
These particular items are ones that we may take for granted every day, but that our students just don't have. Apart from the obvious, the issue with not having these items is that it can cause more problems for our students (i.e. embarrassment, bullying, skipping school, etc.). Our students face enough challenges - this shouldn't have to be one of them.
The Student and Family Services Coordinator at our school, Ms. O, does an amazing job assisting our students in every way she can. She helps provide food, personal items, and a variety of services to our parents and students. However, it is hard to get funds for things like food, personal hygiene items, even clothing, which makes providing for our students difficult sometimes.
In partnership with Ms. O, the items such as deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and lotion in this project will be made available any student who is in need at our school. By having these resources available to our students, we are investing not only in our students' education, but in their livelihoods.
