This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our students here in Hammond, Indiana are one of a kind! We are located near factories, outside southern Chicago and are a suburban area with many families who work multiple jobs to make ends meet. Our large families are trying their best to balance work and home but their children's hygiene is not as much as a priority as food or shelter. I started this pantry idea two years ago and it is such a success! Students come to the office regularly asking for items to brush their teeth, use the wipes or having just started sweating - using deodorant for the first time!
Between laundry, brushing teeth or thinking about deodorant or having access to a shower; students' self esteem and self care have suffered since the pandemic.
Our students (particularly in 5th and 6th grade) are bullied for "stanking" or smelling bad. In addition to being a Title I school and having 100% free and reduced-price lunches, our school is very diverse. These hygiene items will not only help our students in 5th and 6th but will also help other students in 3rd and 4th who are changing physically and mentally.
We want to build confidence and self care habits that will last long into the future and we need your help! Please consider helping these budding teenagers begin healthy life long habits. Something this simple can help their mental, physical and personal growth journey for themselves.
We have a few students who have been bullied due to their 'smell' or their clothes not being clean. This project can help them to help themselves in learning about hygiene and about going back to class smelling/looking better.
