This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of us take for granted basic hygiene necessities, which are especially needed during the middle school years. As our students are becoming adolescents and they are physically growing, we want to make sure that they have everything that they need to take care of themselves. This includes basic items such as deodorant, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, etc. We know that when students are able to take care of themselves, they feel good and this has a direct impact on their self-esteem. However, there is a population in our school that is unable to afford these items, and we need support.

I am a counselor in the District of Columbia at a public middle school.

Although we are a completely new school this year servicing 6th graders, our current students from our four feeder schools have a high number of in-transition/ homeless families. The majority of our students also receive free or reduced-price lunch and there is a population of our students that is not able to afford these necessary hygiene items. We want to make sure that every student in our school has access to these basic items.

My Project

When middle schoolers are feeling good about themselves, they are more confident and willing to take on the school day. We want to make sure that no matter their situation, every student at our school can come to school feeling confident and ready to work.

We are planning to make hygiene kits with the materials that we receive such as deodorant, mouthwash, lotion and more so that we can provide these products to those students who are unable to afford them.

This will encourage students to take care of themselves and boost confidence in the process. We want to make sure that all of our students are feeling good and are able to tackle the school day.
