This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a guidance counselor in a school that is located in a borough of New York City. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Throughout a typical school day, I counsel students as young as five and as old as fourteen. I work in a pre-k through eighth-grade school. The students I work with come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Many of them are new to our country and are just learning the language. Many of them live in single-parent households. Some of them come from families that have one or more parents in the military. In addition to these challenges, many of them have special needs. Despite the many challenges they face, all children deserve to be rewarded for their positive behaviors and effort throughout the school day.

My Project

As a guidance counselor in a K through 8th-grade school, I am often asked by female students for sanitary napkins for their menstrual cycles. The students feel comfortable asking me and I would like our girls to be able to have access to feminine hygiene supplies in a discreet manner.

When a student is uncomfortable in regards to menstruation, that not only affects their emotional state but also effects their academic focus.

Having these supplies for my female students in the guidance office helps a lot in many ways! Students can stop by, ask for a menstrual pad and then head back to class. This way, they do not miss out on instructional time. Also, they do not feel embarrassed or stressed since they are asking in a discreet manner.
