Hydroponics: the Practical Side of Science, Part II

Help me give my students hands-on hydroponics to see how science is applied in real life.

My Project

Last Spring, you so graciously helped us purchase one hydroponics system, and now we have two. Our goal is to have one for each of our six periods, so please help!

My students are inquisitive and want to learn more about how science relates to the real world.

Much of what we teach involves hypotheses, theories, laws, facts, figures, distances, and measurements, which can be challenging for students to relate to. I aim to make science more relatable to them by doing a hands-on project that proves science is practical knowledge and can help answer the world's problems today.

Today, the world is dealing with clean water, food production, and other environmental concerns.

We are running out of clean water, food is more expensive, and fresh food is becoming increasingly difficult to find. As more farms and ranches are sold for development, leading to contaminated fresh foods and polluted water, hydroponics emerges as a solution. Using 90% less water than traditional gardening and taking up under four sq. ft., hydroponics can produce fresh produce 365 days a year. It requires no insecticide as it is indoors, and all the fertilizer is in a closed-loop system, so streams, rivers, and aquifers are not contaminated.

Please help me bring science back to Earth for my students. Our ultimate goal is to have six systems, one for each class period. Each class will care for and manage its system. Six systems will enable us to compare the performance of each class, ultimately leading to experimentation with fertilizer types, watering schedules, and plant placement across different classes. This system will move us closer to our goal.
