Help me give my students the opportunity to grow their own food! Students will learn about hydroponics systems, grow food for their school community, and learn how to set up a mini business.

My Project
Our students are primarily young teens of color who are incarcerated in New York City. Most are students in special education and have not had great success in a traditional school setting. All students are eager to engage with hands-on learning activities. We have previously started some hydroponics activities and are looking to expand the program so students can learn about different hydroponic systems as well as pair this activity with cooking healthy meals.
We hope to offer a hydroponics program to teach our students independent living skills, vocational skills for employment as well as therapeutic horticulture to support their emotional development.
Our students come to our program involuntarily through the courts from a variety of circumstances, poverty, foster care, and community violence. The goal is to provide our students with skills to build their self-efficacy, horticulture and hydroponics knowledge, and improve their interpersonal collaboration.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
