This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are kind and loving individuals who have been identified with various different significant disabilities. They come to school every morning with big smiles and big hearts. Throughout the day students are presented with many different learning activities which are designed to help solidify the skills that were introduced throughout high school. The students within this classroom are encouraged to learn various sustainable farming procedures, horticulture concepts, and the production of urban farming. This class focuses on teaching students the job readiness skills they will need for gainful employment in a garden or horticulture type of environment.
My special education students are all between the ages of 18-22 and are working on vocational, transition, and career readiness skills in the area of horticulture.
Using soilless cultivation with Nutrient Film Technique can help students with disabilities learn new innovative ways to grow plants. This growing system will meet the specific gross motor needs to be able to produce potential crops. Compared with traditional soil cultivation, this system will teach our students the concepts of hydroponic growing with a closed loop nutrient-rich system. Further, this will help teach our students valuable lessons about water conservation and how to minimize our footprint.
