My students need to learn that REAL food does not come in a plastic bag labeled HOT FRIES but that it can be grown in the CITY right in their own windows with a hydroponic garden!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Zweig's classroom raised $302

My Students
Our students back packs are filled with HOT FRIES, Skittles, and tons of "snacks" that come only in plastic and none are from "nature." When handed a WHOLE FOOD, they look for the plastic bag and wonder "What is this!" can you imagine their wonder when they will see FOOD grown in WATER???
Our students are in a Title I (free or reduced lunch) school in urban Louisiana and many never leave the city or even the State!
They have very little life experience, and most live in what the city now calls a FOOD DESERT because of lack of neighborhood groceries within the limits of their public transportation abilities. They have very little understanding of nature or its beauty. Probably 1% of the traditional students have ever heard the word "HYDROPONIC!"
My Project
When this project starts, we will set up the school's first, maybe even the area's first, hydroponic garden! The goal is to have an area set up where we can line up hydroponic crops, and grow them in a window to simulate what the kids could do in their own homes in the case of a food shortage or crisis. My 143 little angels would also use this as a lab area to learn photosynthesis, water properties, biotic and abiotic factors and so much more. The entire school would be welcome to come and see what the future of gardening may come to!
Almost every child that I teach idolizes the huge plastic bags filled with HOT FRIES.
They herald the golden arches, and they bow to the constant barrage of commercial advertisements that entice the children to fill their lives with soft drinks, and all of the processed foods in the world. PLEASE consider helping us build a sizable HYDROPONIC garden that we can display in our STEM nights and FOOD day for the public to LEARN where this country needs to go to save the environment we live in!
