Chinese fans are a staple in Chinese culture. They come in different sizes and shapes, and are adorned with beautiful paintings and calligraphy.
To make the lesson more engaging and memorable, I would like to introduce the art of the Chinese fan to my students by using the hydro-dip or water-marbling technique, so the students can learn about the fan and walk away with a beautiful fan of their own creation.
For the Hydro-dip method, students will drip the paint colors of their choice into the water in the storage bin and dip the fan into it to create beautiful images. Then students can write characters of their choice, be it their names, a poem, or just a few meaningful characters, using the painting pen to mimic the effect of a Chinese calligraphy brush pen.
For the water-marbling method, students will use a shallow tray with water, drip the paint colors onto the surface of the water, use a pencil to manipulate the paint pattern, and then lay the cardstock paper on top to pick up the design.
Chinese fans are also decorated with a tassel, and we will need the drill to make a hole in the fan handle in order to attach the tassel.
The table cover, easy-grip tweezers, and gloves will help keep the classroom and students' hands clean, and the extra paper is for students who prefer to cut out their preferred shape of the fan.
The other benefits of this project are (1) the students have a beautiful fan that they can keep and use, and (2) to provide students with a creative outlet to express themselves and help relieve some of the stress they face on a daily basis.
