My Project
As a teacher at a middle school in Virginia, I have a diverse group of students.
Our beloved school is located in the inner city, on the Southwestern side of Richmond.
Serving students in grades 6 – 8, the student/teacher ratio is roughly 20 to 1. There are over 500 students at the school, with a large portion of students who come from bilingual households. Each year, a small portion of students start the school year unable to speak or understand the English language. Students are mostly from low to moderately low-income homes, making 98% of students eligible for free lunch.
Our scholars are compassionate, caring, and resilient learners. They face challenges, like struggles with literacy, but always come to school ready to take on any obstacles that stand in their way. A great education is part of the foundation of life success that I encourage my students to build upon.
The funding of this project will make a huge difference in my students' learning and focus. There are two separate reasons for funding this project: nourishment and motivation.
Students learn best when they don't have to focus on outside factors, like hunger and lack of hydration.
The drinks and snacks will be used to make sure that students can receive small amounts of food when they need a little pick-me-up. They will also have access to candy and other snacks for classroom rewards and motivation. Students won't be charged any money for these snacks and don't have to find a vending machine or bring anything from home. My students love to nibble while completing group work and sip on water during independent reading time.
