My Students
I am a 6th grade teacher in a Title I school where 80 percent of our students qualify for the free or reduced-price meal program. Arizona, unfortunately, does not value education. We have not gotten funding in over 10 years for badly needed equipment. As a result, kids are the ones that lose out!
These students come from a lower socioeconomic part of Phoenix and lack the resources to play on club teams.
With the right training these girls will easily play at the high school level and some will go on to receive college scholarships with your help. Our hope is that when we get the pitching machine to assist at practice, we can bring in the sixth grade girls and expand our program.
My Project
This year is like no other. Because of COVID, our volleyball girls can only practice outside. In addition, there are no competitions between schools or family and friends gathering to watch games. Nevertheless, our team stays strong and continues to practice with each other’s support and enthusiasm.
Our current volleyball situation is less than ideal, with old balls that are ripping from the seams and easily deflate.
Some are so old they are no longer soft. It does not take long to wear these balls down and they should have been replaced long ago.
With new balls, the girls will be able to improve on their volleyball skills of passing, setting, spiking, blocking, digging, and serving. They will be able to play without the sting of old balls that have gotten brittle. New balls will allow more individual drills that can be done during COVID. Now, more than ever, players need their own volleyballs so they can practice safely and be ready for future games with volleyball pride!
