Huskuleles: Ukuleles for Sixth Grade Huskies

Help me give my students a classroom set of ukuleles so that they can explore the world of music through a different avenue.

My Students

My students have shown incredible perseverance throughout this time of COVID learning. They come to school ready to try whatever activities I have planned for them. Many of my students have never played musical instruments before, so they sometimes think they're not very musical. I want to enable them to find the music within themselves, whether that's in piano, ukulele, or music technology.

My Project

Music is a great way for students to build community and learn valuable skills, such as discipline, creativity, teamwork, and focus. Making music is a brain workout that enables us to express emotion, serve others through the beauty of music, and relax. For the first time this year, I will be teaching General Music on a trimester wheel to our 6th grade students. I have some keyboards for a piano lab, but with a block schedule of 106 minutes, they need a variety of musical activities. That's where ukuleles come in.

Ukuleles are popular among middle school students and encourage even reluctant musicians to jump in.

Given COVID-19 precautions, having a classroom set of ukuleles will allow us all to make music together in a safe way. Any support you can provide is greatly appreciated!
