Hurricane Sandy Washed Away Our Homes, Not Our Hopes

My students need to read stories of hope as they help our community rebuild and heal after the effects of Superstorm Sandy. I am requesting books like "Hope in the Unseen", "Hope Is an Open Heart", "Teaching Hope: Stories from the Freedom Writers", and "Brothers in Hope: The Story of the Lost Boys of Sudan".

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need books about hope and real survivors, stories that make them believe that tomorrow will be a better day.

Our Middle School is a diverse high-need school comprised of over 1,000 students in grades 6 to 8.

Half of our student population currently receives free or reduced priced lunch. Approximately half of our students receive support services in addition to their core classes. Many of our students are not native English speakers. All of the students have been adversely affected by Hurricane Sandy.

My Project

Hurricane Sandy and the storm surge crippled our small waterfront community. Many have had to live going into our second week without heat or power, all have had no school and some no longer have homes to return to. The books I have selected are "chicken soup" titles to heal the souls of children who are so focused on the loss of today and need to see the possibilities of tomorrow. Each title tells of how a person with hope has more than material things.

Please help my students read about others who survived after being displaced, hurt or otherwise impacted by tragic life events.

They need to be ready to rebuild our community and these books will show them how.
