Hurricane Sandy Relief: Learn STEM Through Graphic Novels!
My students need graphic novels and big books, plus a big book easel, for science to help them learn and understand the concepts contained in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Curriculum.

My Students
Hurricane Sandy hit Staten Island, New York and devastated all of us. As many were evacuated, many were not. Staten Island is now an island of devastation. My students with disabilities were forced to abandon their homes, some are now homeless, others replaced, and some returned to just rubble left.
I teach students with autism and multiple disabilities from 2nd to 8th grade.
I work with over eighty students on the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum. They want to understand what happened to them and teaching them about science and nature is key for understanding. They now need our school more than ever to provide a nurturing environment to them. They come to school to feel both safe and wanted. My goal is to inspire a love for science and show them the amazing wonders this world has to offer.
All of my students are eager learners who are like little sponges; ready to absorb anything you give them. They love to read graphic novels! Whether it is on a computer, through an activity on the smart board, iPad, or just sharing a book, they love to learn new things in a variety of different ways.
I currently need graphic novels in my classroom programs so students can understand and correlate why events like Hurricane Sandy happens.
My Project
Through the set of Max Axiom graphic novel and science books, my students will be able to learn through a different style of reading and writing that interests them. These books have the potential to grab their attention and explain scientific concepts that are hard for students with autism to understand. These books will be used as an independent reading tool as well as shared reading and a read aloud for the class in order to start our lessons.
It is rare to find nonfiction literature that a student will inspire students to read. Since these books provide many pictures, it is also easier for students who do not understand all the words on the page to see what we are speaking about. These books provide science content in a way that students enjoy and will offer a chance to enhance science vocabulary and concepts!
This is essential for students with autism, who are growing up in a world where they will have to pick a career and join the workforce.
These books may inspire students to pick a career in science or find out that special thing they are good at. For our students this is essential and you can be a part of that learning! Your help will ensure that they succeed. We need your help because we rely on donors with a kind heart such as yourselves to get everything we need to best educate our students.
