This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it is like to grow up in poverty and lack educational materials? This is the life of most of my students. They have a huge hunger to learn, but lack the resources at home and school to really tap into this desire to learn, particularly through the use of 21st century technology.

My students are among some of the most fascinating I have ever worked with.

They are 100% ESL (they comprise 65% of the school) and have a huge range of personalities, from fun to serious and everything in between. They have voracious appetites for learning and are always ready for something new! My students attend a public school in NJ which is located in a very high poverty and high crime neighborhood. Very recently, we were affected by Hurricane Sandy and were out of school for two weeks during recovery. This was an interruption that my students could not afford! Virtually all of the students I teach were born in another country and have come here with their families for a better life. Financial struggles are common for them and the purchase of electronic devices for learning does not exist for most of them. If I can provide for them by developing a powerful listening center with an iPod Touch, iPod Shuffles and a boombox I think I will really increase their interest in reading!

My Project

Creating well-rounded English Language Learners involves developing all areas of literacy development, with listening being one of these critical language areas. A fully developed listening center is an incredible learning tool because it will allow the content to be delivered in a highly desirable way, capture and maintain the interest of the students and expose them to technology they may otherwise not be able to access. iPod Touches, in particular, allow teachers to download tons of apps that can be used for a wide variety of uses. As well, the boombox will allow several students to access the same stories and listening material at once. I have already compiled a long list of apps that I am looking forward to downloading and using with my students with this technology!

I am a lover and avid user of 21st Century technology in my personal life so I really see its benefit.

I want very much to be able to bring this into my classroom. I think of technology as exciting, adventurous, and motivating, just as my students do. However, unlike many of us, items such as iPods and boomboxes to anchor the listening center are things they see from afar but never actually get to be able to use. I am hoping to change that by creating this exciting listening center!
