Hurricane Sandy Recovery: Geared Up and Putting it Together!

My students need 4 KNEX sets in order to continue their learning of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and give them a fun outlet in this time of devastation.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Amato's classroom raised $955

My Students

Hurricane Sandy hit Staten Island, New York, and devastated all of us. As many were evacuated, many were not. Staten Island is now an island of devastation. My students with disabilities were forced to abandon their homes, some are now homeless, others replaced, and some returned to only rubble.

I teach students with autism and multiple disabilities from 2nd to 8th grade.

I work with over eighty students that attend specialized classes in a specialized school. Many of our students have limitations communicating their wants and needs but pain is not something needed to be communicated, it can be seen on the faces of the students and our staff who have lost everything. I want to give these children a chance to find joy and happiness in the one place they can always call home, their school. I want them the chance to create something beautiful to replace what they currently see around them. Working with gears and other materials will increase my students understanding how simple machines work and will give them pride in creating projects of their own. They can build large projects with the huge selection of gears. I want to add to our current set of gears, which is not much. Most importantly, they can work together in a group because cooperative learning is so important at this age

My Project

If you do not have the right tools to learn, then, you cannot succeed. Please help these children engage in create a variety of projects in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) curriculum. This can help our to move past the devastation outside and think of the creativity that can come from within and build a brighter future. For children, building critical thinking is one of the most essential abilities they learn throughout their entire lives and you can be a part of that learning! During these tough times, we want to foster positive educational outcomes for all students. The students work must also be engaging. In the STEM curriculum, I feel they can find something unique to themselves, that they will have ownership over and learn important educational and life lessons in the process. These materials will help students to forget the devastation around them and concentrate on building their imagination and focusing on the positive things we have in our lives.

These materials are essential for my students with disabilities to learn STEM while meeting all the Common Core Learning Standards and they need our help!

A hurricane is a scary thing for any child, whether they are disabled or not. With your help, will ensure that my students will have the chances they need to succeed. We need your help because we rely on donors with a kind heart such as yourselves to get us through now at one of our hardest times due to this life altering storm.
