This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am proud to teach at an inner-city school in Houston, Texas. Unfortunately, my school was affected by Hurricane Harvey. Our school was flooded severely and needed to be rebuilt.
My school is almost totally English language learners who struggle to learn to read, write, and speak the English language.
Most of my students are from low-income families that are willing to do whatever they can to help with their children's education, but that is not always enough.
The children are hardworking and thirst for knowledge. Their willingness to succeed will not be stifled by the continued effects of Hurricane Harvey. Learning must continue.
My Project
It's been a year since Hurricane Harvey destroyed our elementary school. The past school year we were relocated to a temporary location while our new school is being built. We managed to make it through the chaos of the 2017-2018 school year. We then found out that we are being relocated again for the 2018-2019 year.
I am one of five teachers who will not have a classroom due to limited temporary buildings in our new location.
I will have to move from room to room to teach writing. As a result, I have to carry my materials with me each day as I float through 4 classrooms.
This is not close to an ideal way to teach a STAAR tested subject, but it is what is necessary until Braeburn's new building is ready in 2020. My students are very flexible and eager to learn, therefore I want to be as prepared as possible to still give them a quality education. The mobile cart has storage space, a whiteboard, a place to store anchor charts or posters, and is MOBILE! It will make an unbearable situation a little more bearable.
