This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.

We recently had a devastating event that turned our Houston community upside down.

Hurricane Harvey destroyed most of their homes in our immediate area. My school is considered high poverty and many of our students do not have technology at home. Most of our students are receiving free lunch. The majority of our students are Spanish speakers and receiving English as a New Language services. Our students have different learning needs that impact learning. They are either visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners. They learn best with the use of pictures, visual aids, text, watching video clips, performing hands-on activities and by modeling the lesson to complete certain tasks.

Despite all of the challenges that our students are facing, they are always eager and ready to learn. They are excited to know what is in store for them each time they step inside my classroom doors.

My Project

My students love to learn in different modalities. They love moving around with hands-on activities, listening to read-alouds, but most of all they love using digital resources to enhance their learning environment.

I currently have only one working computer that the scholars are able to access.

The MacBook requested would make a great difference in the classroom for scholars because it would allow students who don't have access to technology get ahead with modern day learning. My students would be able to download apps for various math and reading practice skills; go on virtual field trips in science and social studies; research the weather and learn and create various student products to present in class. Taking charge of their own learning through their eyes with technology...priceless!
