This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in an excellent Dual Language program, learning both Spanish and English, in a low-income area. About 80% of my students are English Language Learners. At Meet the Teacher night in August, students were so eager to learn in their new classes. Their faces were gliming with enthusiasm! Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey flooded our school and we lost everything! Many of our students' families lost their homes leaving them displaced. We have relocated and students are bused to another neighborhood for our school. At the second Meet the Teacher night, students returned with love, appreciation, and that same enthusiasm to learn, even though we were at an unfamiliar location.

At our relocation, my students do not have a carpet to sit on during circle time or workstation resources to practice and review skills independently.

My ELL students thrive with effective modeling & support, hands-on practice using manipulatives, reading unlimited books via internet, songs and videos. My goal is to rebuild a safe haven for students to escape the affects of Hurricane Harvey and continue learning.

My Project

This year our campus is using Restorative Justice discipline practices. We must have circle time daily to listen to each others' feelings and address any concerns. At our relocation, the tile floors are cold and hard! The classroom carpet will be used during circle time for Restorative Justice practices. The carpet will also be used during our literacy block for whole group instruction, students to read to themselves, and listening to stories read aloud.

The workstation activities and supplies, like file folder games and science tools, will give students hands-on experiences to practice and master content independently and cooperatively.

Hands-on experiences are required for my ELL students to be successful. It also allows me to work with my students in small group to become better readers by using Daily 5 components.
