My Project
I teach at a 6th grade only campus and my students come to me from 6 different elementary schools. Many of them have never touched clay because their elementary school did not have a kiln. I have a kiln but unfortunately, I am all out of clay! Most students love working with clay. It is the first thing they ask about when the quarter begins. "Are we going to do clay?" I want to say yes!
This is an opportunity for them to learn where clay comes from and how it has been used for thousands of years.
Many students do not even realize how many everyday things are made out of clay. We discuss utilitarian uses as well as sculptural uses in various cultures and throughout history. They can appreciate this natural resource and the process that goes into using it. My plans for the rest of this year include clay coil bowls, effigy vessels, and roses. It has been my goal to put clay in the hands of every 6th grader who comes into the art room. This may be their only chance to experience ceramics at all because art is optional beginning in 7th grade. So many students do not realize that there is something for them in art until they try sculpture. Please help me give them all the chance.
