My Students

If you have played an instrument before, you know the cost associated with doing so. We were fortunate to win a grant and received 30 band instruments to begin our band program at our school. However, the instruments received offer us just a start. We would, as an ensemble, love to march!

We are a k-8 school in a inner city district in CT.

Our student population is around 500 students, with 200 students in the middle school. We have a high level of poverty with close to 90% of our students receiving reduced or free lunch. Our students are fun loving and enjoy learning and working in and around our community. In the past 3 years that I have been here, the music department has grown in many ways, with the development of school wide talent shows, community service opportunities, performance opportunities, and the creation of the school band. Most of this growth would not have occurred without the special people in our lives who have donated a great deal to us. Our city hosts a variety of parade opportunities which will, in turn, showcase our band and help with fundraising and community service goals. I would like to see our ensemble performing within the community.

My Project

With your help and the limited monies we have raised by fundraising, our students will have 3 marching drums with carriers; 2 snares and a bass drum. Without your support, we will be limited to one snare and one bass drum. Our percussion section has been very excited since I brought up marching with them. The students have been excited to see, carry, and perform on new drums and in a new setting. Other sections of our band are also excited about the opportunity to showcase their hard work outside of the building's concerts and small performances. Some have even suggested bringing our group to assisted living communities to allow for the elderly and sick to have the experience of seeing our band. With your donations, our group will be able to accomplish this much easier than we can now!

One of my most vivid memories was marching in the opening ceremonies for the Special Olympics in the early 90's.

The sense of pride it gave me to do something good for others, outweighed the 5 miles in 90 degree weather with a large bass drum strapped on! Your help will help me share these experiences with my team! Thank you for your consideration!
