Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Passionate teen readers at our urban public school struggle to get their hands on high-quality books. These students, 90 percent of whom come from low-income households, form the largest book club in the city and their hunger for engaging books is inspiring.
One of the biggest challenges for our book club is to find texts that are interesting to the wide range of book club members present at our monthly meetings. Recent years have shown an increase in the enrollment of teen boys in our club; however, there are few titles that will appeal to both boys and girls. We are in desperate need of well-written novels that are engaging to all members of our school’s book club.
We are seeking 50 copies of “The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins, a young adult science fiction novel that is appealing to all teens. The protagonist is a headstrong teenage girl who sacrifices herself to protect her sister and enters a televised fight-to-the-death contest to provide for her family. She has moments of brilliance, tenderness, folly, and clumsiness, but she remains strong and steadfast in her loyalty to her mother and sister. Girls will rejoice to read a novel with an empowered female lead and boys will be hooked on the action. All readers will be captivated by Collins’ futuristic world, as well as her clean prose and dry sense of humor.
Our book club is a refuge for students; it provides teens with the opportunity to strengthen literacy, form friendships, build self-esteem, and share ideas with peers. Discussions that begin about themes and issues we encounter in the reading often develop into larger discussions about the lives and experiences of the teens themselves. These conversations help them to learn how to examine and discuss literature, a skill many of our students need to hone for a smooth transition to college.
Your contribution will provide a high-interest book for students, many of whom have limited or non-existent personal libraries. Your donation, however, will do more than just supply a wonderful book to young urban readers; your gift will give the opportunity for these teens to come together and explore literature and life in the warm environment of our book club.
