Filling up a teenager's stomach can seem like an impossible task! Even for teens who have plenty of food resources at home, making it through the school day can be very difficult. Throw in long after-school activities and that becomes an even bigger struggle. Now imagine how difficult that task becomes for those students who struggle with food scarcity in the home. Focus and steady hands are of upmost importance in my construction and carpentry classroom and shop, especially when students are using dangerous equipment. Students enter my high school construction and carpentry classroom from morning to afternoon with grumbling stomachs. Some students come from backgrounds where food insecurity is a daily struggle, while others come from homes where food is rarely an issue. Students from all walks of life swing by my classroom looking for a snack to get them through the day.
Issues from the social anxiety of eating in front of peers, forgotten lunches, bullying, poverty, and after school events all send students my way looking for food.
I want all students to walk into my classroom knowing that a growling stomach and shaky hands will not interfere with their learning. Through Hungry No More: Part 3, you can fill a stomach and find a special way into their hearts.
