My Project

I teach a small, rural school's fifth through eighth grade Intensive Reading. I have approximately 70 students in total. Many students cannot bring snacks to school and may have an early or late lunch, so they are hungry during class. I love having a snack bin with snacks available to students who need them. Also, providing snacks for hungry students not only addresses their immediate physical needs but also teaches valuable lessons about looking out for one another. Also, they can be used to reward students who are caught doing compassionate or kind acts. This will teach students compassion for one another because there are many students unable to bring their own snacks. These items collectively teach students to see the world through the eyes of others. I'll gauge students' comprehension and application of compassion through their demonstrated acts of kindness and supportive behavior towards their peers.

They are always so excited to come in, grab a snack, and get busy with their work.

One student arrived in my class yesterday and exclaimed, "I have been waiting all day to come to your class! A snack and a lesson, what could be better?" This proved exactly why I keep snacks for these students!
