My Project

As a special education teacher in Florida, I am used to seeing my students face challenges in the classroom. However, these challenges should not include dealing with food insecurity. Not only are teachers meeting students' educational needs, but we also address emotional and physiological needs as well.

One of my students confided that he had gone three full days without eating.

As you can imagine, my heart broke. How can a child be expected to succeed in school when they are so hungry?

I developed an original token economy system to reinforce desired behaviors and reward students accordingly. Students earn "Class Cash" for just about everything, such as coming to class on time, wearing their ID, helping others, and completing satisfactory work. Class Cash can then be spent at "the store" (as my kids refer to it), giving them energy to fuel them through the rest of their day. There is an unspoken rule that anyone who is hungry can get a snack from Ms. Meiners.

The generosity of DonorsChoose supporters has been a true blessing. My kids appreciate the variety of snacks provided, and it has eased the financial burden on me, as I was already providing snacks out of my own pocket. I'm very proud of the system I have implemented, and the buy-in from students has been incredible.
