Hungry, Happy, and Healthy: Empowering Students Through Cooking

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn how to cook healthy meals for themselves and their families.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Herceg's classroom raised $812

My Students

Our scholars are explorers: they seek to know more about the world around them in order to better understand their own place on this planet. Outgoing, inquisitive, reflective, quirky, and kind: our students bring many different strengths to the classroom. These kids love science, and not just the explosions/chemicals/excitement part of science; they thrive on investigation and experimentation. They strive to find the truth through scientific inquiry.

Our small project-based school allows our students to learn authentically and personally, and they rise to the challenges we give them.

These young scholars come from urban Baltimore and are eager to take what they learn in the classroom into their communities and homes.

My Project

Our health is deeply impacted by the food we eat. In Baltimore City, where our school is located, 1 in 3 high school students is overweight or obese and 13% of the adult population has been diagnosed with diabetes: higher than both the state and national average. Our students want to be healthier and, like all people, they deserve access to health. However, this can be difficult without the knowledge or resources to access and cook food for themselves. Our class visitor, Brianna Billups, will empower the 7th grade students of Southwest Baltimore Charter School by teaching them how to make delicious and healthy meals that are simple enough to make on their own at home.

Your generous donation will provide my students with the knowledge and skills to take control of their own food habits.

Ms. Billups will spend three days in our class teaching students basic culinary skills and safety. Students will learn how to cook turkey burgers, sweet potato fries, shrimp tacos, and healthy smoothies and fruit snacks. We will use induction burners, blenders, and toaster ovens to make our food.

We have spent all semester learning about food access, how food is grown, and how to choose healthy food. The next natural step is practicing how to make our own food: this is critical if we want our youth to stop relying on unhealthy packaged foods. Our work with Ms. Billups will culminate in a digital cookbook we will create as a class.
