In order to compete for future leadership roles, college acceptance, and jobs in our current economic situation, my students must have the opportunity to read a wide range of literature. I have discovered a book that my students can’t put down! My 10th grade students are devouring the "Hunger Games."
My students are some of the poorest in the area, with approximately 60% being eligible for free or reduced lunches, but they certainly have determination.
They are some of the smartest kids I have ever met. Some of my students have a limited vocabulary and have trouble summarizing texts they have read. Unfortunately, too many of them have been forced to read books they did not like and now have a general distaste for reading. I hope to improve my students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension by reading the "Hunger Games" series, by Suzanne Collins.
My Project
Anyone who has spent much time with a room full of teenagers will agree that simply “telling” them anything is not as compelling as “showing” a lesson. I was able to obtain some copies of the "Hunger Games" and have shared them with my students. Many of them finished it within a week and are begging me for the next two books in the trilogy. To meet the needs of all of my students, I need a class set of the the "Hunger Games," along with a few copies of "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay," the next two books in the trilogy. We also need the last two books on audio CD for the special education and ESL students. By reading the "Hunger Games," I will be able to convince students to endure their trials and tribulations. This is a compelling story that is universally applicable to my students, who have many obstacles, and I hope that they will see themselves in the narrator.
