My Students

My students attend a public school in San Francisco, where the diversity is huge and the learning styles vary immensely. My students are very eager to learn new things and enjoy coming to school to help nurture their love of learning. Students in my class come with different socioeconomic backgrounds, different family lifestyles, and different English language levels. Because the students I teach are challenged with learning a new language for 80% of their day, it is even more important for me to make sure they are not challenged in other areas, such as with their social emotional needs, physical wellness, health and nutrition, or learning needs. They are challenged daily, but strive hard to make the most of the wonderful opportunity they have to enrich their lives by learning a new language and culture.

My students are very special because they are learning to become fluent in two languages at the same time, while coping with the struggles of learning and growing with each other’s different learning styles.

My Project

Having extra snacks in the classroom to give to students that may be hungry, or who may simply need a breakfast or afternoon pick-me-up, is great to have. With this project, I hope to be able to support my students in a way where they do not have to experience hunger. Hopefully, when students are well fed, they will be in a better mood to learn, try new things, develop confidence, have a good self-esteem, and can feed their brains and body with the nutrients they need to succeed.

Some students come from a low socioeconomic family, where they will come to school without breakfast or healthy lunches and snacks.

Without food to grow, their attitude for learning and their ability to self-regulate in tough situations can be affected. My goal is to avoid these struggles for my students, and give them some hope for success in a challenging learning environment.
