My Students
I work with students who have deficits in reading fluency and comprehension. By providing reading materials that interest the students, they want to become more active with reading. As my favorite author, Dr. Seuss says, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss
I work with special education students at the high school level who struggle with reading fluency and comprehension.
Most of them come to me with a fear of reading, but I want to inspire them to want to read more. Our school is a low-income facility that struggles to meet the needs of the students. We are limited on resources and many of the resources we have for special education students are donated.
My Project
Everyone loves a good story, but helping struggling readers is difficult when the stories they are asked to read are not of interest to them. I have found that when I read to them one of the novels that I am currently reading (such as the ones I am asking for), they love to hear the story! It is that excitement that I hope to increase in my classroom. My students can do many activities with these stories. We can work on Vocabulary builders, webquests, writing, the use of figurative language, etc. The lessons to be learned from reading a book are endless.
I have found that when I read books with my students it opens up so many different learning opportunities.
My students will gain reading fluency, comprehension, and writing skills with every novel they read. By having copies of Of Mice and Men, Hunger Games, Divergent, Night and To Kill a Mockingbird within our classroom, we will have more resources to engage our minds and increase our reading and writing skills.
